Kraamzorg

Kraamzorg is a unique phenomenon in the world. The Netherlands is the only country where women receive the support of a kraamverzorgende (maternity nurse) after childbirth. This care is essential during the postnatal period. The maternity nurse teaches you and your partner how to care for the baby and provides support with breastfeeding. Typically, a maternity nurse stays for about 8 days after childbirth to ensure that both mother and baby get the best possible start. This period of care and support is crucial for a good start for the new family.

How Many hours of kraamzorg do you get?

If you are pregnant, you probably want to know how many hours of kraamzorg you will receive, what it costs, and what is covered by your insurance. In the Netherlands, kraamzorg is considered necessary care and is therefore covered by basic health insurance. You do pay a personal contribution, but if you have supplemental insurance, this contribution may be (partially) reimbursed. Kraamzorg Sestra is a member of Cooperative KZG, which has contracts with all health insurers in the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands, you are entitled to at least 24 hours of kraamzorg, spread over a period of 8 days. Depending on your personal situation, this can be extended to a maximum of 80 hours. The standard provision is 49 hours of kraamzorg. This amount can be adjusted based on your needs, as determined during the intake interview.

Adjustment to Your Family Situation

The duration of kraamzorg can also vary depending on the composition of your family. For instance, single mothers may be eligible for longer kraamzorg. If you have already spent several days in the hospital, the duration of kraamzorg can be accordingly shortened. You also have the option to choose fewer hours of kraamzorg.

Intake Consultation

The number of hours of kraamzorg (maternity care) is tailored to each individual situation. Before the 34th week of your pregnancy, I will visit your home so we can get to know each other. We will discuss our joint tasks in the postpartum period, and I will answer all your questions. I will also advise you on what else you can acquire for childbirth and the baby. During this conversation, we will discuss your wishes and needs, and estimate how many hours of kraamzorg you will require. Should your situation change, the number of hours of kraamzorg during the postnatal week can be adjusted, for example, in cases of feeding problems.

Costs and Reimbursements of Kraamzorg

With Kraamzorg Sestra, you are in expert hands before, during, and after your delivery. In the Netherlands, kraamzorg is considered essential care and is therefore covered by basic health insurance. You pay a personal contribution of €5.10 per hour (rate for 2024). If you have supplemental insurance, this contribution can be fully or partially reimbursed by your insurer. For specific information about the reimbursement of your personal contribution, please contact your health insurer.

Kraamzorg Extra

It can be challenging to miss the support of your maternity nurse after the standard period. Therefore, I offer the option to purchase additional hours of kraamzorg. These hours are available at €60 per hour (rate for 2024). For more information about purchasing extra kraamzorg hours, please contact me.
